Death Certification Workshop Summary 

 The Barbados National Registry would like to thank all the presenters, doctors, nurses and allied health professionals who attended our  medical workshop on the “The importance of death certification”. The workshop was held on the 27th of August 2015 at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital auditorium.  Afternoon comprised of six presentations, two interactive activities and three question and answer sessions. The workshop was well attended with a total of 126 persons.

 

The main objectives of the workshop were to improve the process of death certification in Barbados highlighting the need to improve the accuracy and timely completion of death certification, educate the attendees of the importance of mortality data and the role they play in the health care system, and to provide information on how death data is used. Data collected from death certificates are of great importance with a significant impact on the development of health policies.

 

The seminar comprised of three sections, and at the end of each section there was a ten minute question and answer segment which made the workshop very interactive and interesting.  The first section of the workshop was about the history and importance of death certification. First, Professor Patsy Prussia outlined the historical progress of the death certification process from the 1800’s including the introduction of the ICP coding of deaths. This was then followed by two other presentations given by Dr Ingrid Cumberbatch   of the Ministry of Health and Ms Angela Rose of the Barbados National Registry. Both presentations focused on the uses of death data in the respective organisations.

 

During the second section, the participants were given a pre-test by Dr Lynda Williams. This included a presentation of a case in which the participants were asked to complete a death certificate. Other highlights of this section were presentations from Ms Tracy Bancroft a Medical Records Clerk 1 representing QEH Death Records department and Ms Leslie Branch a Clerical Officer from the Barbados Supreme Court. These two presentations were based on issues that both departments encounter on a daily basis with death certificates. Ms Tracy Bancroft also educated the participants on how to follow QEH’s procedure of the certification of death.

 

The next section of the workshop focused on the rules for the completion of death certificates, when to complete a death certificate and when to request an autopsy. This was presented by Dr Stephen Jones, Pathology of the QEH laboratory. He gave an abbreviated presentation based on the “Guidance for doctors completing medical certificates of cause of death in England and Wales, revised 2010” and outlined some of the challenges faced in completing death certificates.

 

The workshop concluded with a pre-test review and case studies in which Dr Lynda Williams reviewed the cases with the participants. This exercise further highlighted the complications that come with filling them out. Such complications were widely discussed among participants.

 

The Death Certification workshop 2015 received great feedback and we at the BNR thank all of those who made the event a success.
